The Surgical Services Assistant II will function as support to licensed personnel in Surgical and anesthesia services. The Surgical Services Assistant II will perform environmental services, nutritional services and transportation duties in patient, public, and staff areas of the hospital in direct support of patient care. The Surgical Services Assistant will assist with maintaining and ordering unit based SPD and Dietary supplies. Works in a secure department with access to areas where medications are stored.
Clean Operating Rooms/patient rooms between procedures/visits.
Inventory and maintain supplies and forms within the specified unit par levels. Maintain cost effective utilization of supplies and equipment.
Demonstrate knowledge of location of equipment and positioning of devices in the surgical area.
Provide for the routine care of equipment assigned.
Change bulbs in lights used in the surgical area.
Maintain patient safety: O.R. bed locked, patient bed locked during transfer, bed rails up at all times, oxygen set-up on all post-op beds.
Assist with patient positioning and lifting.
Demonstrate knowledge of prep order. Prepare prep supplies and explain to patient.
Carry out basic prep: abdominal, chest, facial/neck, limb, perineal, side, and vaginal. Complete prep in a safe and timely manner.
Isolation: set-up and clean-up, receive and discharge patient.
Transport patients according to established safe procedures.
Transport patient charts, laboratory specimens, blood products and maintain accountability for these items. Complete transports in a timely manner.
Follow department policy for delivery of lab specimens, obtaining and returning blood products, and completing appropriate paperwork.
Clean assigned areas thoroughly, using the standard procedure. Consistently follow guidelines and standards when mixing and handling job related chemical solutions. Utilize Infection Control Standards and guidelines for all cleaning procedures. Follow all standard and isolation precautions.
Maintain and store clean equipment. Maintain par levels of paper products. Keep supplies and equipment rooms orderly.
Maintain Oxygen tanks near OR rooms.
Ensure no reuse (re-cleaning or resterilization) or reprocessing of any medical equipment/product/supply/device that is labeled single-use and/or disposable.
Works in a secure department with access to areas where medications are stored.
Demonstrate knowledge of hospital transport procedures and protocol.
Demonstrate ability to prioritize tasks according to urgency. Develop a routine that allows for maximum use of time. Exhibit ability to effectively multitask.
Participate in training new staff.
Troubleshoot errors and perform quality assurance checks.
Assist in training new Surgical Services Assistants.
Assist the Department Manager/Director as requested in review and update of department functions and procedures.
Give input to Department Manager/Director concerning operational planning.
Participate in quality improvement measures and monitoring within the department.
Provide information to the Manager/Director as requested in review and update of department functions and procedure revisions.
Replenish medications into various carts/boxes or kits for anesthesia use
Follow established policies and procedures relating to the ordering, receiving, and storage and replenishing of medications and IV Solutions
Ensure that an adequate stock of medications and supplies are available to anesthesia.
Complete occurrence reports and anesthesia preference cards.
Prepare specialty carts: code cart, intubation cart, emergency line cart, and medication night cart.
Organize workroom and follow equipment cleaning protocol.
Act as a resource to medical and O.R. staff.
Set-up and clean room and setup individualized trays.
Ensure proper maintenance of equipment resources.
Assist with operation of anesthesia machine, cardiac monitor, CO2 Analyzer/Gas Monitor, Hot Line, Pulse Oximetry, Rapid Infuser, Warming/Cooling Units, I-Stat, Hemochron, Accudata, Jet Vent, and ACT Machine.
Follow procedures for cleanup of anesthesia.
Washes and sterilizes reusable equipment and reports malfunctioning equipment to the appropriate personnel.
