Duke University Hospital seeks to hire an Advanced Respiratory Care Practitioner who will embrace our mission of Advancing Health Together.
General Description of the Job Class
Interventional pulmonary is an advanced sub-specialty focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of chest diseases.
The Interventional Pulmonary Allied health provider is responsible for assisting physicians in diagnosing and treating diseases including lung cancer and non-malignant diseases of the lung, airway and pleural spaces. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, they specialize in the advanced care of patients undergoing interventional bronchoscopy and pleural procedures using the latest minimally invasive techniques in the Bronchoscopy and Interventional Pulmonology Lab
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Performs pre-procedure assessment. Reviews pre-procedural patient information including H & P, medications, allergies.
Coordinates planned care with other healthcare team members.
Maintains professional relationships, including frequent and open effective communication with internal and external constituents.
Must display a strong foundation in physiology along with a strong understanding of the respiratory system
Knowledge of basic infection control practices. Thorough knowledge of and ability to implement principles of aseptic technique.
Knowledge of diagnostic and therapeutic scopes and high-level disinfection process.
Knowledge of the organizations policies and procedures especially those pertaining to the bronchoscopy suite, safety, security, fire, emergency and biomedical.
Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a collaborative team is required.
Provides clinical services according to pulmonary/cardiac practice standards and acts as a resource to the interventional pulmonologist and other staff to ensure optimal patient care and efficient departmental operations.
Adheres to department policies and protocols to ensure that all procedures are optimized for patient care and diagnosis/treatment. Demonstrates patient safety by use of guard rails, breaking mechanisms, shielding, safety straps, and patient monitoring.
Demonstrates competency in managing data. Tracks cases, billing for procedures, inventory and equipment. Maintains accurate and complete case logs.
Document procedures concisely, completely, and in line with EMR policy lay down by the institution.
Demonstrates a thorough understanding of pulmonary principles and theory, anatomy, positioning, and technique for obtaining optimal access for all utilized modalities.
Recognizes clinical and emergent problems that may interfere with procedures and take appropriate action to resolve them and produce the most desirable outcome.
Assists physician during all diagnostic and interventional procedures using standard department protocols, appropriate radiation protection, sterile technique, and infection control practices.
Assists anesthesiologist during intubation and emergency situations.
Ensures equipment is operational and notifies appropriate personnel for service and repair. Proficient with troubleshooting equipment issues during procedures.
Provide interventional pulmonary services including advanced diagnostic bronchoscopy (EBUS, navigational bronchoscopy, robotic bronchoscopy), therapeutic bronchoscopy for benign and malignant disease (including foreign body removal, airway stenting, bronchoplasty, cryo spray, Argon plasma coagulation), endobronchial valve placement, bronchial thermoplasty, thoracentesis, medical pleuroscopy, placement and management of indwelling pleural catheters, pleurodesis.
Work collaboratively with existing leaders of bronchoscopy services, lung cancer screening and incidental lung nodule management.
Successfully completes all departmental, hospital and system competencies required for job category with designated timeframes.
Demonstrate appropriate critical thinking skills, technical skills, and knowledge necessary to provide competent care in a multidisciplinary environment.
Understands the basics of the Quality Improvement (QI) process and can list the primary QI indicators being followed within the department.
Routinely records data for the QI processes within the department
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education
Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
Must maintain annual skill maintenance and annual safety/compliance requirements
Must maintain North Carolina annual license requirements for CEUs
Experience
A minimum 3 years' experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist or Registered Nurse.
Experience in performing and/or assisting in pulmonary procedures is desired
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification
North Carolina State Licensure
Certification by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC)
Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
